A new year is a fresh start, and what better way to get off on the right foot than by taking the first steps along your career path? Securing a summer internship abroad is Step 1, but from the day you set foot in the office it will be up to you to make the most of your experience by being the best intern possible. Here are 10 New Year’s Resolutions for an Absolutely Amazing Internship!
Resolution #1: “I will try to solve problems on my own.”
Although it’s important to ask your employer questions, especially when you first start your internship, they will be impressed if you take it upon yourself to tackle any problems you encounter. Before running to your superiors with an issue, first ask yourself, “Is there any way I can solve this problem on my own?” They will surely be impressed by your can-do attitude.
Resolution #2: “I will take initiative.”
Initiative is probably THE most important quality you can possess as an intern. Remember that you’re only at your host company for a short period of time, so from the start you need to express your willingness to make a contribution. When you find yourself done with all your tasks, ask your superiors if there is anything more you can do, or even if there’s another department that could use your help. Your co-workers will respect and value you for this and possibly give you more responsibilities.
Resolution #3: “I will turn challenges into opportunities.”
Completing a particularly hard task is a great opportunity to impress your boss, but also for your own personal growth. There’s no telling the amount of skills you’ll acquire after taking on a personal challenge, not to mention the huge boost of confidence you’ll get once you’ve completed it!
Resolution #4: “I will give myself time to adjust to my internship.”
With any job, it’s normal for the first few days or even the first week to be a period of adjustment. Expect to be doing a lot of reading to familiarize yourself with your host company’s way of working and the in’s and out’s out the business. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask your supervisor questions about your tasks! It’s always better to ask lots of questions in the beginning than to make mistakes later on.
Resolution #5: “I will be polite and grateful always.”
While it’s true that you’re a valuable asset to the company as a summer intern, remember that you wouldn’t be there if not for your host company giving you the opportunity to work with them and your superiors taking time out of their busy schedules to train you. Treat them with respect and let them know you appreciate them having you there.
Resolution #6: “I will communicate constantly, whether it be with my superior, my colleagues or Absolute Internship.”
Keeping lines of communication clear among all those involved in your program is essential to getting everything you can from your experience abroad. There is no problem that can’t be resolved, but the first step is taking the time to talk about them. There will be times when you will face challenges while on your internship, but everyone wants you to succeed, so speak up.
Resolution #7: “I will always look on the bright side.”
A little optimism goes a very long way! It’s easy to get bogged down in negativity. A series of small setbacks can be cause you to spiral, so when you think you’re having a bad day, take a step back, breathe deeply, maybe go for a walk and then come back to your work space. Sometimes all you need is a little perspective to turn your day around.
Resolution #8: “I will always be on time!”
Time is precious, it’s something you can’t give back to someone once you’ve taken it from them, so be sure not to waste anyone’s time, including your own, by being late! Punctuality shows that you are taking your internship seriously, even if you’re only with the host company for a short period, and this will not go unnoticed by your host company.
Resolution #9: “I will be the best colleague possible.”
Being an amazing intern means being willing to help everyone, from your supervisor, to employees from other departments, to fellow interns. Making a contribution to your host company begins with being the first person to put your hand up when someone needs something done. As long as it moves a project forward, there is no task that you are too good for.
Resolution #10: “I will make the most out of my Absolute Internship Experience.”
Invited to sit in on a meeting? Pay attention and take notes. Assigned an unexpected task? Give it your best shot. Take in as much as possible whether you’re at your job or exploring your destination city.
