An Insight on How My Public Relations Internship in London Paid Off

Evalyn Watson is a rising senior student from Canada, taking a major in The School for Advanced Studies in the Arts & Humanities at University of  Western Ontario. Alongside, she’s taking an honours specialization in creative writing and english language and literature. Back in April, she started a public relations internship remotely for a company based in London, and today she is sharing some of her insights on how her remote experience finally paid off!

What’s been your biggest challenge so far while studying or working?

My biggest challenge while studying in university and working was doubting myself and my abilities.

“I found myself thinking I would never be able to have a stimulating and fulfilling job. My host company, however, pushed me beyond my limits and trusted my work ultimately enlisting in me confidence I never thought I would have.”

Which Absolute program did you participate in, and why did you enroll in that program?

I participated in the 12-week remote internship program with Absolute Internship in London, UK. I was originally supposed to travel to the UK in 2020 before deferring and ultimately deciding to do the remote program. Despite my anger at the pandemic for making it harder for me to travel, I have gotten so much invaluable experience from the remote internship program thanks to both Absolute Internship and my host company.

Which company did you intern for and what do they do?

I interned for Impressive PR, a media public relations firm. They cater to many different types of clientele including comedians, musicians, authors, actors and influencers to get them coverage with press and media outlets.

What were your main tasks during the Public Relations Internship?

I did many different jobs for them over the course of my internship including managing their social media, reaching out to press, pitching clients and doing research for new clients, journalists, media outlets and much more. On top of these responsibilities, I was tasked with starting a secondary entertainment website for them entitled Entertainment Now, which I created content for over the course of my internship.

What was the outcome after you finished your Absolute Internship?

The goals I had for myself going into this internship were to learn as much as I possibly could, prove to myself that I could hold my own in the professional world and get something tangible to show schools and prospective jobs in the future.

“Not only did I feel that I achieved all my goals and gained quite a bit of confidence in my abilities. I was offered a job from my host company as soon as my internship ended.”

How did your internship help you achieve your goals?

My host company taught me quite a lot as well as giving me all the proper training I needed to do well, but beyond that, my supervisor trusted me to complete crucial tasks for the company. It was daunting at first to be given so much responsibility but in the long run I learned to trust myself and my abilities.

What are you currently up to, or what are your plans for the next few months?

For the rest of the summer, I will be working part-time for my internship host company in my hired position and I am returning to school in the fall to finish up my degree while still working for Impressive PR at the same time.

What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing an international internship?

DO IT! Whether remote or not, it was a life-changing experience for me to get out of my comfort zone and learn more about other cultures and professional fields. My time with my host company through Absolute Internship has genuinely changed my entire outlook on what my career might look like and expanded my expectations of what I am capable of in the professional world.
