Absolute Scholarship – Kennedy Addo – Resilience

Reflecting back on the month I spent in Barcelona, I’m have an overwhelming feeling that there’s so much out there in the world for me to explore.

Waking up every day and realizing that I was in a different country with new friends in a beautiful hostel in the middle of the most popular city in Spain was an unimaginable feeling. Having the opportunity to work in Barcelona was a real treat.

The people I worked with quickly became a new family and the work we did quickly became fun. On my first day in Barcelona my phone was unfortunately stolen out of my back pocket and every bone in my body was telling me to book the next flight back home, but something in my gut told me to stick it out because there might be something great waiting for me down the line.

My gut was right, spending almost 2 weeks in a foreign country before I got a new phone forced me to take in all of Barcelona without distraction.

Honestly, if I had the ability to change anything, including keeping my old phone, I still wouldn’t have changed a thing. Working with a printed out map for directions, walking around Barcelona asking people on the streets which way I needed to go was honestly one of my favorite parts of the whole experience.

It feels good getting positive feedback from Spanish people when your Spanish is total basura (garbage), and making the journey to work in 3 hours when it’s only supposed to be a 30 minute walk still felt like an accomplishment.

I’m currently writing this account on my first day of classes as a senior, sitting in my financial planning class, and all I can think is

“Which country am I going to live and work in when I graduate?”
