Our team share their best advice for anyone taking an interview with a business hoping to nail their summer internship placement. Typically these interviews take place by video call, since the business in question could be anywhere from Barcelona to Shanghai, Beijing to London!
1. Get Informed
Make sure you know plenty about the company you’re having an interview with. Read through their website and check out their Facebook page too. Try to familiarise yourself with what they do and how they do it. Research the related industry in general, that way you won’t feel lost if someone throws some jargon in your direction. A little research goes a long way.
2. Find the Right Place to Take the Call
Finding a quiet place to take your interview call is key. A calm location without any distractions or background noise is ideal. Loud traffic, barking dogs or intruding family members are a no-no.
Make sure to test your Skype account well before the interview, or make sure your phone is set up to receive international calls. Connectivity issues need to be ironed out ahead of time.
3. Speak Up Throughout Your Interview
Be clear and try not to talk too quickly. Be confident (you’re awesome!). Incredibly, smiling whilst you’re talking changes up your tone and helps you sound upbeat.
4. Dress Smart
Companies want to see the whole package, so dress as you would for the office. This will help them imagine you as a member of their team.
If they can picture it, you’re one step closer to making your internship a reality.
5. Sell Your Skills
Show the company how you can contribute to their mission, don’t focus solely on what you can get out of the internship experience. It’s a two-way track. Demonstrate your willingness to learn, take initiative, and be part of a productive team.
Good luck!
