How To Be Successful at a Virtual Internship

How To Be Successful at a Virtual Internship

Find Something You Love

In a world of remote work, there are TONS of options when it comes to virtual internships for summer. In order to be successful at anything, it helps to enjoy that thing as much as possible. Try searching for an internship that excites you! Maybe you want to work in publishing? Finding a virtual internship for summer at a publishing house is an excellent idea.

If you have no idea what you might want to do out of school, take this time to simply try something new and exciting. In general, take the time to research the virtual internships you are applying to to make sure you are truly excited by the opportunity. Being genuinely excited about your work will show, and help you along the way.

Ok, You’re There….Now What?

You’ve made it through rounds of interviews and now are ready to start. Great! The first thing you’ll need is a workspace away from distractions. Working remotely for the first time can be quite daunting. How will you get all your work done without anyone watching? That’s up to you to figure out.

Finding a space that allows you to be productive and comfortable is a crucial way to set yourself up for success in a virtual internship for summer. Gather the material you need. This is your space so whatever will help you feel productive, go find it. Once you’ve created a comfortable and practical space to do some great work and deep learning from, you’re ready to start!

Communication

A frequent complaint of the new digital workplace is that first person interactions, and the subsequent relationships built, are greatly missed.

It can be hard to stand out and make an impact on your superiors when you’re confined to a tiny screen. Because of this, it is vital to take extra steps to meet coworkers. Schedule one-on-ones with people in your company that have interesting jobs to you. Ask questions! Instead of building relationships by proximity, you have to do a bit more leg work to truly establish yourself on others’ radars. While it’s difficult, it’s still very possible to create lasting professional relationships in your virtual internship for summer, and it is critical to do so to your success.

Do Good Work

It should go without saying, but a critical component to successful virtual internships for summer is completing good work.

It can be difficult to separate the joys of summer and proximity of family and friends while you work remotely, but you need to be able to focus and accomplish your tasks in a timely manner. By showing your employer that you are focused and serious, you will have a better chance of being offered a job post graduation. Ask questions in virtual meetings! It can be so easy to leave yourself on mute, but you were included in the meeting for a reason. Speak up if you have good ideas, and listen to your superiors attentively. Don’t be caught on a separate browser shopping for clothes. Put in as much time and effort to complete good work as possible, and you will reap the benefits.

Thank Everyone

A tip I learned while completing my own internships remotely, was to always send physical thank you cards to people who made extra time to get to know you. While this may be a bit old school, anything you can do to stand out after you’ve left your internship is crucial. Since your fellow coworkers might not miss your physical absence, remind them! Sending thank you emails can be just as effective as physical thank you cards in my opinion and will  keep you in the minds of possible future employers. Even if a thank you card does not directly result in any big exciting action, the act of thanking someone is highly classy. It won’t go unnoticed.

Absorb Everything

At the end of the day, internships are in place to allow you to learn about your field, as well as your own personal work habits. Having a successful virtual internship for summer means you have to absorb the experiences around you, create relationships, and simply learn.  So relax, and enjoy the ride! You’re going to do great.
