25 Jul Home is where the heart is….
Before I left my home in Melbourne, Australia; almost everyone I talked to reminded me to pack warmer clothes. Because even though I was technically going in summer, London summertime is lightyears different to Melbourne’s. or so they thought. London is currently experiencing a heatwave that is so very reminiscent of home, any homesickness has evaporated. I am regretting listening to their advice as most of my clothes are too warm to comfortable wear. Good thing there is Primark; an amazing store where you can get a whole new summer wardrobe for around 50 pounds (shoes included). I highly recommend visiting the one near Tottenham Court Rd Tube Station.
One of the biggest differences I’ve found between these two cities, is that London is at least 5 times bigger and 20 times busier. Everyone you meet is in a hurry, there are a million and one things to do every night and I’m finding myself not saying no to anything. Perhaps it’s because I live in the suburbs back home and the city is about 35 -50 minutes away. Here I live right in town, so going to see a musical after work is no big deal. I’ve already got two planned and a laundry list of more.
The Tube is amazing, everything you’ve heard is true. one train every two minutes, lines colour coded and named. It’s not without its faults; there are delays and they are really overcrowded and hot. Prepare to sweat and get up close and personal with strangers. It will get you from A to B and even I who is severely directionally challenged can’t get lost.
There are a million and one things to do here; you HAVE to go on the London Eye, the view is worth everything, countless differences between here and home. Even though I’ve only been in London for 3 weeks I can already see the most impactful difference…Me. I’m a completely different person here. I have more spirit, more energy and am out almost every night. I can already see how hard it’s going to be to leave, I have fallen very much in love with this wonderfully vibrant and fast paced city. But hopefully this new me will be coming home too.
