11 Feb Happy Chinese New Year with Red Envelopes
This weekend we celebrated Chinese New Year and entered the year of the Snake with Absolute Internship and all our interns in China. It’s the biggest holiday for Chinese people and is celebrated with fireworks and lots of great food!
Did you know that in China people give red envelopes containing money to bring prosperity to their loved ones in the new year?
Giving red envelopes is a custom during Chinese New Year. Since the colour red is considered as a symbol for happiness and good luck, giving red envelopes to the young generation is perceived to deliver good wishes. The amount of money contained in the red envelope usually ends with an even digit, in accordance with Chinese beliefs – 88 and 168 are both lucky numbers as it includes the lucky number 8.
Tip: Children are always the ones being given the red envelopes, or are at least the ones that are prioritized.
