09 Dec I don’t want to be a tourist; I want to be a traveller.
My name is Chris and I am a current student studying a Bachelor of Commerce and Engineering at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. I am planning to do a month-long internship in the field of Finance with Absolute Internship in Hong Kong. Having actually grown up in Singapore before moving to Australia, entering a foreign environment for an extended period of time isn’t something completely new to me. Despite this, I have been under the care of my parents my entire life, and I have always felt quite sheltered. Going to Hong Kong will be the first time I will be travelling independently (albeit with Absolute Internship), and I have mixed feelings of nervousness and excitement at the same time. On this internship in Hong Kong I am looking forward to stepping outside my comfort zone and to tackle new challenges. I will be looking to be much more self-reliant as I enter this journey; from doing the necessities of taking care of myself (cooking and cleaning), to experiencing new lifestyles and trying new things.
“Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”
– Marry Ritter Beard
I have always believed that travelling is as much learning about new countries and cultures as it is learning about oneself. This internship in Hong Kong, will give me the chance to test myself and capabilities, to discover new sides to myself. I hope to explore myself not only just by entering a new country, but by also working full-time in a fast-paced environment.
I am entering this program with an open mindset, to jump on board every opportunity that presents itself. I want to be unafraid to take risks, knowing that I have a support group in Absolute Internship to catch me if I do fall. As can be seen from the infographic below, I don’t want to be a tourist; I want to be a traveller.
