16 Aug Always Have an Open Mind
Traveling to China was a fantastic experience with countless opportunities to learn and develop as a person. My biggest piece of advice to a future intern is to not have any expectations coming into your trip and internship. Come with an open mind to learn as much as possible and let the experience change you and develop you, as it will. If you come with a certain mindset of how the time is going to be or how you think it should be, you will be disappointed in the end.
Another piece of advice is to come to China with an open mind about Chinese culture. Do not hold your home culture with you as you travel to China because you are bound to face differences and uncomfortable situations. Be open to Chinese Culture and learn to adapt on the fly. You will have a more streamlined experience if you learn to go with the flow.
Come to your job ready to learn. You will hopefully find many things you enjoy about the field and career and you will find things you don’t enjoy. Take all of them to heart. Realize that this time is for you to go out of your comfort zone and take risks on the job. Do whatever you can to get the most out of it. You are an intern so there are no risks associated with how much you put into the time.
My biggest piece of advice for the working time is that you get what you put into your job. If you come with a great attitude and give it your all and get to know your boss, you will be satisfied and enjoy the experience. You have to be willing to put in effort. To do this, make sure to ask your boss questions about anything. He or she will be more than willing to tell you about the line of work, career paths, themselves personally, and about the industry as a whole.
Some of my favorite times with my boss were having random discussions about economics, about American politics, and even about irrelevant things like cars and watches. Get to know your boss because he or she will be a valuable asset in the future.
