23 Aug Outside of My China Internship
The Absolute Internship team put on a wide variety of activities, which allow you to explore your city and make the most of your time whilst being here. There were too many memorable experiences to pick just one, so here are my highlights from the past month…
The most memorable experience would have to be the weekend trip to Nanjing. Before this trip, having been busy with work and exploring the city I was beginning to feel as though I hadn’t explored the more cultural and historical side of China. So when the weekend trip to Nanjing was announced with an agenda including the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and the Memorial Hall of Nanjing massacre – I knew it was a must! After a speedy hour and a half journey on the bullet train, we arrived in Nanjing on Saturday morning. The days were jam packed with lots scheduled in and on the Saturday evening we all went out for drinks in the heart of Nanjing. On Sunday we visited the Memorial Hall of Nanjing massacre, which was overwhelmingly moving and is an experience that will not be forgotten.
From an educational perspective, the career speaker series have been so interesting and inspiring to attend. Having only just graduated this summer, I am still very much in limbo as to which career path to follow. It was fantastic to hear stories from two professionals working in polar opposite industries – Fashion with H&M and Insurance with Allianz China and it gave me a real insight into their journeys that have led them to Shanghai. They offered some really great advice and I felt inspired and motivated after hearing them speak.
Other activities I have greatly enjoyed on the Absolute Programme are the lunches and dinners that are put on each week – being a foodie and appreciating new cuisines I have tried to embrace the local food and have therefore tried everything I have been offered! My favourite meal with the Absolute Group was a Dim Sum brunch, which was delicious and meant that we had a taste of traditional Chinese food! Other activities put on by the Absolute Programme included the ERA show at Shanghai Circus World – the most impressive circus performance I have seen and I could have easily spent all evening watching it over and over again! The acts were varied and with a live orchestra there was always something to look at.
The activities have been totally diverse and there is definitely something for everyone to enjoy. Being someone who wanted to see as many different sides of Shanghai as possible – Absolute Internship definitely made this happen for me and I only wish I had another month here to further explore and discover more of China.
