07 Jan I’ve been told “Prepare yourself for a culture shock”
Hey guys! I’m Tom, 18, from Queensland – Australia, and I am currently studying a Bachelors of Design (Honours) degree at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane; hoping to one day work as an Architect in firms overseas. I will be participating in a two-month internship with an Architecture firm in Hong Kong. Over the duration of this internship I will document all my experiences and thoughts through this blog.
Firstly, here’s a little more about me. I was born in Melbourne, Australia and my family and I later moved up to a country town in Brisbane, Queensland around 2003. Since living in Queensland, I’ve grown accustomed to the lifestyle – enjoying the beaches and lagoons. For these Uni Summer holidays I’ve decided to leave the Australian lifestyle and get a head start into my career as an Architect by participating in the Absolute Internship program in Hong Kong during 2014. This is my first time visiting Hong Kong and I’ve been told by many who have been to “Prepare yourself for a culture shock” which leaves me to expect the unexpected. I know that Hong Kong island is the business district within the area so I’m expecting a busy, fast-paced lifestyle.
During my course I’ve learnt a lot about the Design Industry but although I’ve learnt about the Design Industry, I’ve never actually had any real-world experience in it; which is why I chose to participate in the Absolute Internship program. Having the chance to travel to an architecturally savvy city such as Hong Kong is the perfect opportunity to learn and experience what it’s like as an Architect. Not only am I hoping to gain significant experience in the workplace, but I’m hoping that this internship will bring me one step closer to my ideal job; improving my knowledge around design, whilst also building long term relationships with future clients/colleges.
I’m excited to travel and learn what Hong Kong has to offer.
