48 days until my Shanghai adventure starts

48 days until my Shanghai adventure starts

Hi everyone! I’m Emma and I’ve just finished my 2nd year of my dual degree in Business (majoring in accounting) and Law at the QUT, Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane Australia. With three and a half years to go, I’m still deciding what I want to specialise in but at the moment, I’m probably leaning towards intellectual property law or combining both of my degrees by becoming an in-house legal counsel for a multinational business. I am so excited about my Shanghai adventure and can’t wait to spend it with so many amazing people!

Here’s a little bit more about me, so you can get to know the person behind the blog posts: I was originally born in New Zealand and moved over to Brisbane, Australia when I was four. Whilst I have spent the majority of my life over here, I am still a kiwi at heart (and yes that means I am an avid All Blacks supporter, much to the disgust to all of my Aussie friends). When I’m not studying, which unfortunately doesn’t happen very often, I keep myself busy by pursuing my interests in music, whether it be through playing my flute or piano, or by simply listening to my favourite bands (which stretch from the Backstreet Boys to Green Day and all the way to little known bands that no one has ever heard of before – I have the strangest taste in music and I’m the first to admit that). But I do spend most of my time on campus. Not only do I study there, but I also work at a cafe there and volunteer with campus wide social activities. And, of course, there’s my favourite activity of the week: university run social netball. What better way to spend a Saturday than playing some netball surrounded by the most amazing friends anyone could ask for!

I have definitely been bitten by the travel bug! It’s safe to say that I’m finding it horribly difficult to contain my excitement about my next great adventure to Shanghai! Whilst I have already been to Shanghai before (I was fortunate enough to be a part of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Orchestra), I am most looking forward to exploring this city from a business perspective, whilst having an amazing time with new found friends. I can’t wait to fall in love with this city all over again! But also, I’m so excited to quench my thirst for learning by experiencing what it’s like to work in such a beautiful country and place what I’ve learnt so far throughout my degree into practice. To gain knowledge from some of the most highly regarded industry professionals, will be a dream come true.

I should mention that I am fortunate enough to have a travel buddy tagging along with me on this trip! When I first found out about Absolute Internship and the Shanghai Internship Program, I told my boyfriend, Michael, about the experience and we both decided to apply and we were both lucky enough to be accepted, so we are heading over to Shanghai together (with a couple of extra days spent in Singapore before hand for some serious retail therapy – something that Michael’s not so excited about, being a typical guy)!

So all I have to do is wait now, and right now, according to the countdown on my phone, I only have 48 days, 19 hours and 53 minutes to wait! Flights are booked! Accommodation in Singapore is booked! My plan to learn some Mandarin in the holidays before we head over may not have progressed very rapidly (well, not at all to be honest) but at least there’s still 48 days left!

So let the adventure begin! See you soon Shanghai!
